  • Projects Keep Me Sane

I have had quite a busy summer!  During that and inbetween other things I managed to finish a cool denim outfit for my neice.seashells for Bonnie She probably won't make it to the beach this summer so I am sending the beach to her.  What I create for the neice I create for her doll.  So Kirsten also has seashells on her denim split skirt.01 Kirsten Goes on Vacation reduced 01 Kirsten Goes on Vacation reduced

The skirt I am making for me is causing a lot of problems.  That is because it is a style that I should not wear.  I think it will be finished this coming week.  I have said that for the last 3 weeks.  But when I get tired of working on that skirt I make doll clothes.

500 summer girl group   I just finished that blue and turquise dress last week.

I think there will be a craft fair in my community this fall.  I plan to sell some doll clothes and maybe some dolls.  I missed a couple of shows this past spring and my inventory is way up.  But I don't worry, I just sew when I can and sell when I can.

  • There is More to Life than Floors

Well, my floor situation just gets worse.  I am trying to patiently wait for this guy to get back from a fishing trip to Thailand.  I am sure he is going to figure out a way to make my floor look better.  In the meantime it is getting worse.  Monday I found two small holes.  The first two were about the size of peppercorns.  802 Holes on day 5 The next one was about twice that size.  Today I found one that is the size of a dime.  801 Holes on day 8 This is not making me happy.

In the meantime I am on to other projects.  The school I teach at has summer camps.  This week's camp is Technology.  Even though I said I did not want to teach this summer, I volunteered to go in a few hours to help with the technology classes.  Tuesday we went to the park with digital cameras.  The assignment was to take pictures of animals and put them in a powerpoint presentation with some research facts.  We might get this assignment done but the animals are smarter than the director that wrote this plan.  They know that in Houston it is too hot to come out in June.  The kids took pictures of birds, mostly black birds.  But they spent so much time trying to zoom that the birds mostly flew away.  We saw some turtles but they were in the water and did not take very many breaths of air.  The kids were not real quick with the cameras.  I think the only really good picture is the one of a wasp nest.  A girl took that picture when we had just about quit and were at the bathroom.  The nest was over the door.  One girl was really wanting pictures of fish because she had her title all planned.  Another girl wanted pictures of lizards.  We couldn't even find a lizard to photograph.  They should have done the research today and I will get them started on setting up powerpoint pages tomorrow.  They may have taken more pictures today.  We know that a lizard visits a window in the directors office quite often.

I have been doing some embroidery on some denim.  My neice wants goucho pants or a split skirt.  Here is what the embroidery looks like.01 cut pieces for split skirt

I am also working on some sundresses for American Child dolls and a shirt for me.

In between all that I am learning how to put music on my MP3 player, scanning the slides my dad took back in the 50s and 60s and 70s, and tomorrow a guy is going to show me how to create voice files on the computer that I can put on CDs.  My plan is to have students take spelling tests as they are ready.  I have been doing this with cassette recorders but that is so old technology.  They are hard to find and I need to replace a couple.  I want to replace them with CD players or mp3 players.

I need to restore my kitchen to a decent workspace because Saturday I am having a brunch and jewelry show.  (I hope no one slips on my new floor).  I will start the cooking for the brunch on Friday by making a cheese cake.  Then dream up some other things.

With this many projects, I don't need to worry about how the floor will be fixed.  I can put that off until Monday.

  • Still Stalling

Today is the first day that I feel I can walk in the kitchen without big worries of slipping.  There are still areas of slippery wax.  I wiped over most of the floor yesterday while I painted the quarter round trim.  The sealant did not absorb into the tile.  Most of it was rubbed off by Mario and his crew, some was rubbed off by me, some was tracked off on our shoes as we have walked in there, and some has probably evaporated.  Stripping the sealant may still be necessary and that probably means take everything back out of the kitchen.  If a different sealant is suggested then I think I will ask that it get tested first in a closet or on the leftover tile.  In the meantime, I am planning a brunch for next Saturday.  12-20 people coming for girl time, food, mimosas, and shopping Premier Jewelry.  I wonder what condition my kitchen will be in.

At church today I heard these messages:  "To live safely keep your eyes on the horizon."  God will guide you through the hazards if you keep your eyes on the horizon.  "God not only loves us, He protexts us."  I need that guidance and protection in so many ways at this time.

  • A Delay

Well, if you were expecting to see my kitchen and lanai put back to normal on this page, it isn't happening yet.  The sealant would not absorb into the tile.  It should have been dry in 4-6 hours.  Since that put it after dinner time we got some take out and ate at one of the crowded tables in the family room.  Then we figured that we would just wait till morning to go into the kitchen.  At bedtime I saw a light on that I could not reach but I went to bed and left it.  I woke up after midnight and wanted that light off.  It was 10 hours after the seal had been put on the floor so I fugured I would walk on the new floor and turn off the light.  I slipped.  I didn't actually fall down but I slipped enough to know the floor was not ready for walkers.  Then after turning off that light I had another light on and so I saw that there were footprints on my floor.  I did not want them to dry there.  At 12:45am I am on my hands and knees rubbing my floor.  I did not like the way it looked but I hoped that with the footprints rubbed off maybe the whole floor would look great when it dried.  I went to bed.  At 7 this morning the floor was still not dry and by now the streaks, smears, and smudges have me really concerned.  I called the office and left a message for the craftsman.  I called again at 8:30 and at noon.  644 streaks I was worried by this time that if it did dry with these problems they may be real hard to correct.643 smeared breakfast area I kept assuring myself that I had done business with this salesman for many years.  He has a carpet service.  The craftsman has worked for him for several years.  I was sure they would not leave me with this mess.

Mario finally called about 1 and he could not understand what I was describing but he was concerned that the floor had not dried.  He told me he would come over when he got a chance.  He came about 4 and then used towels and paper towels to rub it dry.  I turned the air to about 63 (I will need a blanket this evening) and we set two fans to blow across the floor.  He plans to call me in the morning and if I am not 100% happy he will come over and decide if he needs to clean it or buff it or both.

The floor looks a little better now.  The major smears and streaks are gone but there are still lots of smudges.  He thinks if I am careful I can walk in there.  I know that there are still slick places so I have drinks and snacks in the garage refrigerator.  I put some milk there for morning.  I wonder if I will move in this weekend.

  • Project Update

The second day was moving along pretty well.  Tiles were laid.  Corners were measured and dealt with one at a time.  615 the tools of the craftsmanThe saw stayed busy and the carpet had some protection. 616 some carpet protection Then Mario got a call that his child was very sick.  He had to leave and he called in a helper.  They made progress but I could tell they needed Mario to lead them.  620 working in a cornerThere were several phone calls.  The conversational level Spanish that Mrs. Speed taught just did not help me communicate with them.  Mario returned about 6 and all the tile was laid by the end of the evening. 623 tile is laid

We did not eat in this dining room.622 my dining room

We found that Chili's stays open late and we got something to eat.

It was not my idea that the crew work after 8PM.  They have another big job they want to begin this week and some small repair jobs to do.  They worked from 8-8 on Monday except for when I brought in some pizza.  Then they worked 7:30am - 8:40pm on Tuesday except for the time that Mario left and sent a willing worker that wasn't sure of the status of the project.

Today they arrived after 9 because they had gone to pick up some quarter round to give the kitchen a nice finished look.  When they stepped in the door everyone had a job so I stepped back out of the way.624 measure and cut Mario cut the quarter round while someone else staple gunned it into place and the third guy worked again on removing any trace of cement from the lines.

Then they vacummed and wiped and removed every particle of dirt.  Then came the grout.  First He spread it on 631 spreading the grout then they wiped off the excess.632 wipe away the excess grout Finally Mario spread the sealant on twice.633 finally spread on the sealant

Now I wait. 634 floor is finished except for the wait 635 we will move in tomorrow I will move back in tomorrow.
